One of the absolute most rewarding parts of podcasting are the people you get to connect with, and the unexpected episodes that often spring up completely unplanned.
When I reached out to Free the People’s Matt Kibbe to catch up for an interview on Lions of Liberty, I had no intention of discussing his battle with cancer nearly two decades earlier. In fact, I wasn’t even aware of it until I happened upon this article two days earlier.
Some of my favorite interviews are those that go in an unexpected direction, and this interview is a prime example. After reading Matt’s account of his experience I decided I wanted to ask him to speak about it on the podcast, which ended up becoming essentially the entire focus of the interview.
One big takeaway from Matt’s experience with cancer is how it gave him a new found appreciation for the value of time - the one commodity that, no matter what we do, we have no ability to create more of. Worse - none of us know when our time on this physical plane is up. We may grow old and slowly die, we may walk outside and get hit by a bus. Or, like Matt, we may become diagnosed with a potentially fatal illness.
As Matt and I discuss in this clip, I myself have come to value time much more over the past year or so than I have for the previous thirty-nine years.
I now make my best effort to view time as the precious commodity that it is. Time with my wife, my family, my friends - and time for my own well being all take priority now in ways they simply didn’t for most of my adult life.
I hope you will all take some similar lessons from this talk.
