For the first few weeks of living in our current apartment, there was some minor construction of some kind in the apartment directly above us. It was mildly annoying, but sporadic, and we dealt with it. And then it stopped. And all was well with the world.
Until this week.
It started before 8 am on Monday. The pounding, the slamming, The Hammering. But heck, it would probably just take a few hours, right?
By mid-week “just a few hours” turned into “just a few days,” to the point it was starting to drive us mad. It turns out they are essentially replacing an entire floor, or an entire wall, or — I don't really care at this point.
On Wednesday I cancelled several podcast appearances due to The Hammering. It was affecting my mind. I left the house for a few hours to find some peace in a park, and returned to…more Hammering.
Finally I had no choice but to soldier through a podcast with the great Sam Jacobs of Ammo.com (look for it Monday on Lions of Liberty!) Luckily it’s not audible on the broadcast itself, but in the back of my mind I could hear it the whole time. The. Constant. Hammering.
My exasperation reminded me how Lawrence O’Donnell must have felt during his infamous leaked “Stop the Hammering!” tape. Watching this at least cheered me up.
An embeddable video of the original is hard to find nowadays, but there’s a clean version at this link.
I’m not sure what the moral is here, but despite The Hammering nearly driving me mad, I still found a way to Keep Hammering on what I needed to do. Maybe there’s a lesson here somewhere, but frankly I’m too distracted by this fucking hammering to think more about it.

The Expat Money Show - This isn’t my project, but I’m thrilled that I’ve gotten to work directly with my friend Mikkel Thorup to help grow this show over the past few months. I believe greatly in what Mikkel is doing - helping others to achieve greater liberty in their lives by exploring opportunities to live and invest abroad - and helping grow this program has been a true joy. I also get to help moderate The Expat Money Forum on Facebook - check it out!
