This past week I had the unfortunate task of returning to Los Angeles for a few days to take care of some business - a Los Angeles that now has vaccine passport implementation fully in place. At least that’s what the law says, and it just so happens that this is the very same week that the City of Los Angeles was going to begin “enforcement” of the mandate, which requires basically any indoor business that isn’t a store to enforce a vaccination requirement for any customers. This includes bars, restaurants, movie theaters, gyms, etc.
I was curious just how this was playing out in real life, so I decided to head out on a few errands and see how things were shaking out.
My first stop was at Starbucks for a pickup order. I saw this sign before entering:
Yes, that’s right, if a 13 year old in Los Angeles wants to sit down at Starbucks they need to show proof of COVID vaccination.
The requirement didn’t apply to me since I was just picking up, so I grabbed my coffee and got out of there.
I had no issues as I stopped in a couple of stores, which aren’t subject to the mandate since COVID luckily cannot withstand the constant clanging of cash registers.
Along the way however, I did see many, many more signs like these:
Tired and weary from travel, I was seeking a massage in a neighborhood where cheap, legitimately body-fixing massages can normally be had. I encountered at least three that had signs about the vaccine mandate. I finally encountered one which didn’t have the sign, nor did they ask me anything whatsoever about the issue. They also gave me one of the best massages $40 could possibly buy, and these mandate-neglecting heroes turned my day around.
But I had one more task ahead: to meet up with my friend and founder of The Tenth Amendment Center Michael Boldin. We met up at an establishment that will remain unnamed but which he had mentioned had “not said a thing about masks or vaccines.” Sure enough, I walked right in with no mask (Los Angeles still has a mask mandate) and saw no sign nor any mention of vaccines whatsoever.
As Michael and I caught up and tossed back a couple Taiwanese Miller Lite’s (at least that’s what we called them), the issue of the mandates came up. He brought up something which I’ve been thinking to myself for several months. It would, in many cases, be very, very easy to either comply with mandates or even work your way around them in order to have certain privileges that go along with doing so, especially now in places like Los Angeles and New York City.
But by going out of your way to find, support, and create business relationship with those who share like minded ethics, you help to create the parallel economy that continues to grow as a natural counter reaction to increasingly onerous mandates on businesses and individuals. Instead of just holding out hope for things to get better and calling it a “white pill,” you can actually be a part of that hope and create your own white pills by doing something as simple as going slightly out of your way to support and otherwise associate with like minded businesses and individuals.
“This is the Way”, I’d say if I were the kind of person to say things like that.
Also, it was Michael’s birthday this past week, and that tenth amendment loving bastard still insisted on buying my drinks, so if nothing else help me get him back and check out the Tenth Amendment Center.
Here’s a picture of us to prove this really happened:
